Amazing Amazon – Days 10-11 Into the Jungle

We checked out of Chez le Rois at 7.30am and were picked up by Joaquim to head out to the port. There is a huge fish market with the biggest fish for sale and we jump straight on a little speed boat to head across the Negro and the Amazon.

Speedboat from Manaus across the Rivers Negro and Amazon

Soon we cross from the Negro River, where Manaus actually sits on the Amazon and see the famed black and brown meeting of waters – much like we saw at Santarem. We dock soon at a small, muddy, busy, riverside town where Joaquim looks for our transport – More

Drowned Rats – Boipeba to Morro de Sao Paulo

We expected our gap year to feature some excitement but as so often with these things it can come at unexpected times. Super relaxed after a week on peaceful Boipeba staying at what could easily be the best pousada in Brazil and looking forward to our next stop in Morro de Sao Paulo we boarded our speedboat and waved goodbye.

Waving goodbye to Boipeba

Bye Bye Boipeba

The weather was overcast but this often clears quickly and we were impressed with the speedboat. Bigger than the normal motor launches it looked the business and we were sure Charles was right and it was the most comfortable boat around and at R$200 a bargain as they were picking up more guests in Morro!

On the way down to Boipeba we took the route through the mangroves from Valenca and expected to go this way again as most boats arrive this way. It is lovely and calm but about twice as long as the sea route if you look at the map. As often is the case ‘assume’ makes an ass out of you and me and our skipper headed straight out to sea. More

Jungle Explorers – Trekking from Abraao to Lopes Mendes

This is me, Daddy and Ben ready to go on an adventure to Lopes Mendes beach. We took a rucksack because we need water, long trousers and mossie spray too.

Nice bug!

(we are back with better WiFi, expect more posts very soon, lots to tell, MMBZL)

I was walking out the door of our beach house when a most unusual creature dropped on my head. I brushed it off and then I very stupidly head butted the half opened door. I was a bit scared!

Scary bug!

We took a close-up photo of the bug. More

Ben and Ant

Ant hunter

Update – Video added at end.

Keeping Ben, Zoe and Lara alive, fit and healthy is our top priority. As kids they are inquisitive, independent and prone to getting distracted by anything that looks fun or interesting. Within minutes of our arrival on Ilha Grande Ben had caught the biggest ant you never wanted to see. I am pretty sure Ben hasn’t been bitten by ants as he was super confident. I then imagined him playing with a local spider which may not be as harmless as our homegrown Daddy Long Legs More

The Adventure Begins

Ready at Heathrow, we think…

We made it. The last 3 weeks have been truly manic but I’m sitting on flight BA249 to Rio with everything we need for a family gap year:

  • My family
  • Passports
  • Several credit and cash cards
  • A pin cushion of vaccinations
  • A sense of adventure

Rest assured we have a few other bits and pieces in our rucksacks but these are conveniences as you don’t want to buy new socks or toothbrushes each day, you wouldn’t get much else done.

4 hours to we land and More

Last steps on British ground

Well we made it to the airport and onto our flight – just enough time to do a quick post before turning off my phone – more soon from Rio!

MMBZL have left the building!

We did it!

After a 32 hour straight shift of filling boxes and packing them tightly in every last corner of loft and eaves spaces, we finally made it out of our house on Friday afternoon and are spending a lovely weekend visiting family & friends in Shrewsbury, Kidderminster and Sanderstead…

Lara:- ” Mummy, are we on our trip round the world now?”

Well I guess we are – first stop Shrewsbury! The children have been so busy with school plays, sports days, swimming galas and school trips etc… they took the last week of packing very much in their stride – a little out of sorts but soaking up the excitement of coming home every day from school to see which rooms had been emptied and cleaned.

They spent the last week ‘camping out’ in the dining room! Ben has been suspicious of the many bags of stuff leaving the house bound for friends or charity shops but luckily our rapidly overflowing rubbish bins went unnoticed!

They found it hard to choose anything to take with them and asked me to choose for them (they may live to regret that – or thank me their backpacks are nice and light!) and they made no complaint when they came home and found all their toys packed and gone. It already feels good to be nearly clutter free !

It was a rather strange but huge relief to finally get there and shut the door on a very empty home ready for tenants to move in on Saturday…. We have ‘dumped’ our rucksacks and cases in a room at Martin’s office now needing a very carefully sort and final pack ready for 11th July.

To everyone to keeps asking if we have booked accommodation in Rio yet (with rather concerned faces) its very near the top of Monday’s to do list, I promise!

Urban Jungle Camp

In Urban Jungle Exploring Ben and Zoe built a camp in the garden using whatever they could lay their hands on.  But what use is a camp if you can’t sleep in it? How could Dad resist when they asked so nicely and as Mo was out I couldn’t get a second opinion so I said yes until Mum comes home:

Urban Jungle Exploring

Who needs a family gap year for a bit of adventure when you can explore the Urban Jungle? Mum was out so the mice could play.

As usual they waved goodbye as Mum drove off to her girlie night out and I thought they would soon be back inside. Not hearing anything for a few minutes I glanced out of the window…
