Not being the sort of organised parents that have their darlings tucked in bed nice and early (or fed) we went out to dinner. Lara managed her fish and chips but didn’t make it to pudding (lucky Ben).

When a girl just has to sleep
Should prove a useful skill on our family gap year! Talking of which we still only have flights to Rio in just over one month time although Mo has found some apartments near Ipanema which look lovely, if not there is always the airport floor.

Who needs a family gap year for a bit of adventure when you can explore the Urban Jungle? Mum was out so the mice could play.
As usual they waved goodbye as Mum drove off to her girlie night out and I thought they would soon be back inside. Not hearing anything for a few minutes I glanced out of the window…

Spot the children? (there are 3)
Luckily Lara is quite the climber

When I backpacked around the world in 1992 I returned to the UK 12 months later a stone or two heavier than when I departed! I think when I arrived in Australia after 5 months in SE Asia living on healthy rice & veg, the joy of being able to buy biscuits and chocolate somewhat got the better of me!
I’d like to avoid that on our family adventure!

What are you looking forward to most?

Eek! The ticker on our countdown has just moved from 5 to 4 months!
After scouting around for families who have written or blogged about their gap year experiences, I’ve been reading Elisa Bernick’s ‘Family Sabbatical Handbook’ and blog from her family’s 18 month adventure living in Mexico

Christmas in the Clark household is a bit like a big pass the parcel game, lots of unwrapping and a brief moment of delight at getting something (or a disappointed oh?).
Given that Ben and Zoe were back to playing with their (old) Lego by the Queen’s speech and making a spy mission kit out of the cardboard boxes that the presents came in it crossed our minds, not for the first time, that perhaps our kids are a bit spoiled. More

‘I thought you had Zoe?’ echoed between Mo and me as we got out of our cars. 10 minutes earlier we had both left the same school strings evening with 1 child each when really one of us should have had 2. Not a conversation to have when you have just departed on an overnight train, next stop Ulaan Baatar! More
